SQL BPA command line has encountered a problem and needs to close

09 Jan

There should exist on the server a directory named, C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\BPA\.

Create a new directory in this location named BPAClient.  You will end up with C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup
Bootstrap\BPA\BPAClient.

Copy the BPAClient.dll from the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\BPA\Bin directory into this newly created
BPAClient directory and try the installation again.

Note:  This is directly from an email I sent to support someone who was having this issue on their server and it worked for them.  They were running Windows XP.

Thanks! Worked great but it would be nice if Microsoft would fix this. You blogged about this in January 2009 and I’m just installing SP3 update today in May and I still get the same error.

Even worse I’m installing this in 2012 and Microsoft still has not fixed it and by now I think they never will.

Spot on man! Believe it or not this is the first time I have had to upgrade SQL Server 2000 to 2005. Typically I have had the pleasure of always deploying new except for today. Thanks for the info!

Well played sir. I’ve got SQL 2005 Express With Advanced Services on Server 2003 that’s been quietly failing to apply SP 4 for months. This did the trick.

It’s amazing that such a critical process can be subject to the same old flaws from Microsoft.

Thank you for providing a simple solution that was easy to find. Kind of made my day!

Villagecoder you are a shogun warrior ninja. Worked for me on XP running SQL Server 2005 Express trying to install Service Pack 4. Amazing MS hasn’t updated this yet, they should cut you a check.
